Saint Paisios the Athonite, born Arsenios Eznepidis, was born on July 25, 1924 in Pharasa, Cappadocia, shortly before the Asia Minor Catastrophe. His family emigrated to Greece and settled in Konitsa, Epirus.
From a young age, Saint Paisios the Athonite exhibited strong faith and a desire for monastic life. After serving in the Greek Army during the Civil War, he retired to the monasteries of Mount Athos. In 1954, he became a monk at the Monastery of Esphigmenou, later moving to various monasteries and hermitages in Mount Athos.
Throughout his life, Saint Paisios the Athonite became known for his deep spirituality, wisdom, humility, and the miracles attributed to him. He received thousands of people, offering them advice and comfort.
Saint Paisios the Athonite passed away on July 12, 1994, in Souroti, near Thessaloniki, where his tomb is located. He was canonized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 2015, and his memory is commemorated annually on July 12.
