It depicts the Mother of God with the seven swords, or sorrows, with three spears or swords on the right shoulder and three on the left and a sword piercing her heart from below. In the Bible, the number seven usually indicates fullness and abundance. In this case, however, we have the fullness of the infinite sorrows, the pain of the heart, that the Virgin Mary felt during her earthly life.
The sorrow of her soul was so great that all our sufferings seem insignificant or small compared to her sufferings. That is why the Virgin Mary is a ready helper and consolation in our sorrows.
The image of the Virgin Mary is, in the conscience of the faithful, always respected and loved, but accessible and not distant. It lives in the hearts of the people, in the iconostasis of the houses, in the cobbled streets of their islands, on the slopes of the mountains. Always and everywhere, the female, intimate form that comforts, heals, protects, alerts. Her name is in the mouths of the people, in every prayer or supplication and in every eulogy. A companion in joy and a helper in sorrow, the Virgin Mary has passed and has been fermented in the conscience of the faithful as part of their daily life.
