Saint of Christianity. His memory is celebrated by the Orthodox Church on November 26.
According to church tradition, Stylianos came from Paphlagonia (region of northern Asia Minor) and probably lived in the 4th century. He distributed the property he inherited from his parents to the poor, considering it a crime for many to starve and for him to live richly. Then he decided to devote himself to the worship of God. He became a monk and practiced in the desert, living in a cave.
He quickly gained a great reputation for curing incurable diseases and enabling childless women to bear children. He is considered the protector of newborns and especially the sick, which is why he is depicted holding an infant.
Many parents give their sick babies the name Stylianos (Stelios) and Styliani (Stella), to “stylize” and their mothers abstain from all work on the feast day of the Saint. In fact, in some areas they boil wheat and take it to the church to be blessed by the priest and then distribute it for the health of the children.
