Saint Stephen the Protomartyr
Saint Stephen was the first deacon and the first martyr of the Church, which is why he is called the Protomartyr. He was a man full of faith, wisdom, and the grace of the Holy Spirit. The Apostles chose him, along with six other men, to serve the charitable works of the early Christian community in Jerusalem and to care for the poor and those in need.

Saint Stephen preached the Gospel of Christ with great boldness and wisdom. However, many could not bear the truth and light of his words, and they falsely accused him before the Jewish council. As he stood before them, his face shone like that of an angel. With courage and faith, he bore witness to Christ, proclaiming Him as the Son of God.

For his confession, Saint Stephen was stoned to death. While dying, he prayed for his persecutors, saying:
“Lord, do not hold this sin against them.”
Through these words, he revealed the depth of his love and forgiveness, becoming a perfect example of Christian mercy and faith.

The Orthodox Church commemorates Saint Stephen the Protomartyr on December 27th, the third day of Christmas, honoring him as a shining witness of truth and love for Christ.

Apolytikion of Saint Stephen the Protomartyr

First among the deacons and first among the martyrs,
O blessed Stephen, you were crowned by the Lord with a crown of victory;
for you refuted the folly of the Jews,
and saw your Savior standing at the right hand of the Father.
Therefore, intercede with Him for our souls.
