Virgin Mary Portaitissa of Iveron
The Virgin Mary Portaitissa of Iveron is one of the most miraculous and beloved icons of the Theotokos, kept at the Holy Monastery of Iveron on Mount Athos. Her story is filled with divine wonders and heavenly signs that reveal the tender protection of the Mother of God for all believers.
According to tradition, the icon was originally kept in Nicaea of Asia Minor during the time of the iconoclast persecution. A devout widow safeguarded it with prayer and devotion until soldiers came to destroy it. To protect the holy image, she set it afloat upon the sea — and by a miracle, it stood upright on the waters, journeying unharmed until it reached the shores of Mount Athos.
A monk of the Iveron Monastery, Saint Gabriel, was instructed by the Virgin Mary in a vision to receive the icon from the sea. When the icon was brought into the monastery, it was placed in the main church, but miraculously moved by itself to the gate several times. The Theotokos then revealed to Saint Gabriel that she wished to be the Guardian of the Gate — hence the name Portaitissa, meaning Keeper of the Portal.
Since then, the Virgin Mary Portaitissa of Iveron has been the protector of Mount Athos and of all who call upon her with faith. Her feast is celebrated on February 12th, and her grace is believed to safeguard all Orthodox Christians with her motherly love.
Apolytikion of the Virgin Mary Portaitissa
Let us praise the Portaitissa,
the Guardian and Protectress of the House of the Lord,
the invincible defender, the glory of the Iveron Monastery,
and the radiant boast of the Orthodox faithful.
Calling upon her as our protectress and helper, we cry to her:
Deliver us from every danger,
that we may cry to you: Rejoice, O Mother of God!
