Saint Barnabas – Apostle of Christ
One of the earliest Apostles, Saint Barnabas belonged to the group of the Seventy Disciples of Christ. His memory is commemorated annually on June 11th, and those bearing the name Barnabas celebrate their name day on this date.
Barnabas was a Jew of Cypriot origin, and his original name was Joses (or Joseph). He was given the name Barnabas, meaning “son of consolation”, for his generous support of the poor in the early Christian community of Jerusalem. He sold his land and offered the proceeds to the Apostles to help those in need (Acts 4:36).
He was a close companion and co-worker of Apostle Paul, and they taught together in Antioch. He played a leading role in convening the Council of the Apostles in Jerusalem, where the crucial decision was made to separate Christian preaching from the Mosaic Law.
According to Church tradition, Saint Barnabas preached the Gospel in many regions—including Cyprus, Alexandria, Rome, and Milan—and was eventually martyred by stoning in Cyprus.
He is considered the founder and patron saint of the Church of Cyprus.
Apolytikion (Dismissal Hymn):
Divine instruments of the Comforter, and proclaimers of the Word of God,
you were revealed as God-inspired Apostles,
Bartholomew—companion of the Twelve,
and Barnabas—truly a son of consolation.
Therefore, most glorious ones, entreat Christ our God,
to grant us His great mercy.
