Saint Porphyrios Kaysokalibitis was born on February 7, 1906 in the village of Agios Ioannis in the present Municipality of Taminaion in Evia. His secular name was Evangelos Bairaktaris and from a very early age he showed an appeal towards monasticism. Thus, at the age of 13 and having only finished the 2nd Primary, he went to the hermitage of Agia Triado, the well-known “Kausokalyvia” of Mount Athos, where he lived for the next 6 years or so, as a subordinate to two elderly monks, taking the name Nikitas . Then, due to a serious illness, he was forced to return to Evia, where he settled in the Holy Monastery of Agios Charalambous of White Evia, in Avlonari of Evia.
At the age of 20, Saint Porphyrios Kaysokalibitis met the Archbishop of Sinai, Porphyrios, who, recognizing his spiritual gifts, ordained him an elder, giving him the name by which he was to be known. In the following years, because the monastery of Agios Charalambous Lefkos became a women’s monastery, Father Porphyrios settled in the Monastery of Agios Nikolaos, in Ano Vathia of today’s Municipality of Amarynthia, also in Evia.
In 1940, at the age of 34, he moved to Athens, where on October 12 he was appointed as Vicar at the Church of Agios Gerasimos, at the Polyclinic of Athens in Omonia.
In March 1970, Saint Porphyrios Kaysokalibitis having reached the age of 35, he received a small pension from the Hellenic Clergy Insurance Fund and left the post of vicar of Agios Gerasimos, where he continued to offer his services until 1973. In that year he left Athens to settle initially in Agios Nikolaos, in Kallisia (today’s Kallithea) in Penteli and after a few years in Milesi in Malacca, where he built the Holy Sanctuary of the Transfiguration of the Savior. He acquired considerable fame and many devotees visited him at his place of residence.
In November 1991, he moved to his old cell, in Kavsokalyvia of Mount Athos, where he fell asleep on December 2 of the same year.
Saint Porphyrios Kaysokalibitis listed in the Holy Book of the Orthodox Church, by the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and his memory is celebrated on the day of his repose.
