Virgin Mary Galaktotrofousa
The Virgin Mary Galaktotrofousa is one of the most tender and touching depictions of the Theotokos. In this sacred icon, the Virgin Mary is shown nursing the infant Jesus, offering Him her milk — a profound symbol of motherly love, care, and the divine nourishment that gives life to the world.

The name Galaktotrofousa, meaning “Milk-Giver,” reveals both the true humanity of Christ and the real motherhood of the Virgin Mary. Through this image, the Church presents her as the loving Mother of all Christians — the one who spiritually nourishes her children with the grace of her divine Son.

The wonderworking icon of the Virgin Mary Galaktotrofousa is kept at the Holy Monastery of Hilandar on Mount Athos. According to tradition, it originated in Jerusalem and was brought to Mount Athos by Saint Sabbas the Sanctified. The feast of the icon is celebrated on January 3rd, together with the commemoration of Saint Sabbas.
