Saint Apostle Matthew the Evangelist was a disciple of Christ, who wrote the first Gospel (“According to Matthew”). His memory is honored by the Christian church on November 16. Those with the name Matthew celebrate this day. Lewis, as his first name was, lived in Capernaum and worked as a tax collector. He was an official in the Roman authority of Palestine and knew, in addition to the Hebrew language, Aramaic and Greek. Christ saw him in his hometown “sitting in front of the publican” and invited him to become his disciple.
Saint Apostle Matthew the Evangelist became his faithful and devoted disciple, although he remained in obscurity in relation to other disciples of Christ. He wrote a book about the life, miracles, teaching, passion, resurrection and ascension of the Lord. This book of his, written first in Hebrew (50) and then translated by himself into Greek (between 60 and 70), is the first of the four Gospels. After Pentecost, Matthew taught the Gospel in Palestine, Arabia, Ethiopia, Persia, Media and Macedonia.
