Saint Demetrius Gagastathis of Platanos, Trikala

Saint Demetrius was born in the village of Platanos, Trikala, in 1909.
From a young age, he was distinguished by his deep faith and love for his homeland.
He served in the army as an artilleryman, showing remarkable courage.
Later, he joined the Gendarmerie, but left it to devote himself entirely to the life of God.

He was a man of prayer, simplicity, and humility, filled with love for Christ and the Church.
God granted him the gift of working miracles, and he became a source of strength and comfort for many people.
He remained faithful until his repose in 1975.

In 2023, the Orthodox Church officially recognized him as a Saint, and he is now especially honored as a protector and intercessor for the faithful, particularly those from the region of Trikala.

From Platanos you blossomed as a flower of piety,
O wonder-working Demetrius;
you fought the good fight in faith.
Therefore the Church rejoices and cries out to you:
Glory to Him who gave you strength,
glory to Him who crowned you,
glory to Him who works healings for all through you.
