The Saints Constantine and Helen are among the most radiant and beloved figures of the Orthodox Church, honored with the title Equal-to-the-Apostles, because through their faith and works they spread Christianity throughout the world.

Saint Constantine the Great, Emperor of Rome, was the first to recognize Christianity as a lawful religion, granting freedom to all Christians to worship God without fear. He is remembered for his vision of the Cross before battle — the sign through which he conquered — and for founding the great city of Constantinople, which became the center of Christian civilization for more than a thousand years.

His mother, Saint Helen, was a woman of deep faith, humility, and compassion. In her old age, she made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, where she miraculously discovered the True Cross of Christ. Through her devotion and love for God, she became an example of piety and strength for all Christian mothers.

The Orthodox Church celebrates their memory on May 21st, a feast of joy and thanksgiving, as we honor two saints who changed the course of history and illuminated the world with the light of the Gospel.

Having seen the image of the Cross in the heavens,
and like Paul having received the call not from men, O Lord,
Your Apostle among kings, Constantine,
has placed this city in Your hands;
and with his mother Helen, he rejoices in Your divine glory forever.
